⚠ How to spot a paywall trap
The tools that burn founders share a pattern. Walk away if you see:
A subscription to apply. Never pay a monthly fee for the privilege of applying to a grant. Real grants are free to apply for.
"Top Match" on grants you can't win. If it flags a grant that requires revenue you don't have (or an industry you're not in), the matcher is ignoring the hard gates — it's selling hope, not help.
Fabricated data pressure. Never claim revenue or results you don't have. On a federal grant that's not just disqualifying — it's fraud.
Check yourself against the hard gates first
Before you spend an hour on any application, confirm you clear every hard requirement — that's what a matcher should do before ranking:
Revenue: does it require a minimum? (Most kill pre-revenue founders here.)
Who it's for: demographic-restricted (women / minority / veteran-only)? Industry-specific?
Where + what: US/your-state, for-profit vs nonprofit, years in operation?
Cost to apply: if there's a fee to apply, skip it.
